The 2020 election resulted in further progression of the “green wave” that has rolled across the country over the past decade. Not only are cannabis legalization measures continuing to pass in state after state, but the federal government is finally beginning to show some signs of action on federal cannabis reform.
2020 New State Legislation:
Arizona – legalized marijuana for all adults
Mississippi – legalized medical marijuana for patients with debilitating medical issues and a doctor’s recommendation.
Montana – legalized marijuana for all adults
New Jersey – legalized marijuana for all adults
South Dakota – legalized both medical and recreational marijuana for all adults
Changes at the Federal Level:
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced that a vote will take place next month on the MORE Act, which would federally deschedule cannabis and expunge the records of those with cannabis-related convictions. The Act would also impose a federal five percent tax on cannabis sales. The bill is unlikely to pass in a republican-controlled senate, which makes the outcome of the January special election in Georgia particularly impactful on the future of cannabis in America.
President-elect Joe Biden has tiptoed around the topic of federal cannabis reform, saying that he is committed to modest reform, without expanding on any specific promises or including any information on cannabis reform initiatives in his transition plan.
